Making it count

The hubs and I went over our expenses yesterday. We've been married since October 2010 and still haven't quite figured out how to make combining our finances work well for us.

The biggest problem is that I'm a spender. When I'm stressed I spend or indulge my eating disorder. As the eating disorder gets better, the spending and acquiring seems to get a little worse.

I want less junk and more experiences in my life. We both want a bigger financial cushion. I've always lived within my means but it's time to start to keep an eye on the money leaving my wallet as well as the junk coming and going from the house.

This blog's conjoined twin, The Lottery Project (because everything has to be a project, doesn't it?), is now my open diary of my spending. It's my attempt to make progress doing more of the things on my list of what I would do if I won the lottery, AKA, the things that would make me happy in life. If I'm going to spend money I should be spending it on the experiences I want to have, not on silly junk and e-books I'll only read once. I'll likely update that blog only a few times a month. This blog is still my focus; that one is mostly my ledger. But I think the accountability of posting my expenditures online will whip me into shape. I hope!

Item 132: I am such a couch couscous! okay, nobody remembers that commercial.
While I'm talking about wasting less, let's throw in today's decluttered item.We went through the cabinets a while back to find anything that had been sitting around too long. We ate through everything else and this was the only thing we didn't want. It may be July but it's easy to forget that food pantries need goods year-round and now is the perfect time to clear out your cabinets (when is it not a perfect time to clean out our cabinets?) This box was a 'gift' from a friend. I put it in the Summer food donation campaign box at our office.

  1. Don't worry about what you would do if you won the lottery. This list is just hoarding vacuous and unachievable ideas. Declutter that blog. You do not need more than one blog. Your friends will still be your friends with just one blog. Your brain will still be your brain too. Declutter your mind of those thoughts. Keep busy doing things like gardening or hand embroidery or writing poetry or learning a language.

    1. Thank you for the suggestion, but this format works for me right now and I have to do what's best for me in order to be happy. I've found in life that if I don't dream big, I don't achieve big things either.

  2. Do what is right for you at the moment, Joanna. I will definitely check out the other blog - which reminds me......I have a second blog, which has been sadly neglected....one day I will get back to it.

I will email you re our trip - probably in the next few days as it is now only a little over 5 weeks till we leave - hard to believe as it was 5 months when we first booked the airfares.

  4. I'll have to check out your other blog. Sometimes it's good to have separation. I have my declutter blog, but my main one is more for crafty stuff, photography, baking and just life in general. Now that decluttering is slowing down, my other blog is getting a lot more love. =)

BTW - I have a box of that in my pantry too... but I use mine. I love couscous. I think I have 3 different kinds right now. =)

  6. I don't even want to look in the back of my cupboards. I'm sure there are scary things back there that expired years ago. I'm lousy at emptying the cupboards. My parents were huge food buyers. They got nervous when there was less than a 30-day supply of dry goods for a family of 5. That's where I get that from.

I also suspect that you always have to have an issue with something. I don't quite want to call it an addiction, but almost. If you can't have your eating disorder, then you'll be a shopaholic. If you got both the eating and the shopping under control then for sure something else would pop up. That's how it has been for me anyway.

    1. Yup, if it's not one thing, it's another. That's when my psychiatrist starts to joke that I need to make more cash donations to my psychologist :o) Funny how humans are like that. I think a lot of people have that trait.
