An experimental haircut

We both panicked a bit after we saw the final bill for our kitchen renovation and thought it would be good to cut back on expenses for a little while. Naturally, this decision was made just about the time when my hair started looking really ratty. What's a girl to do?

My normal thrice-yearly fancypants haircuts cost $75. Long hair plus D.C. prices equals expensive! I get a super simple cut so $75 seems absurd. Instead I found a local beauty school.

Including tip it cost me $ 17. Not bad.

I'll probably splurge for professional color when I go up for a promotion at work. Hopefully soon!

Have you ever gone the beauty school route for your haircuts? How do you keep your haircuts inexpensive?

  1. So I go the cheaper route and do "hair modeling". Basically, I get to be a guinea pig in return for a free cut and color. Thankfully, most of the times I've done this, it has been at fancy pants salons; thus I get great service for free (or sometimes cost of product, if coloring). I've been scouring Craigslist for my next coloring, but haven't found the right fit yet. I always see the option for a free haircut (usually a bob as it's the standard test out for most schools), which I will get soon if I can't find a cut-color combo gig. The added bonus to this route too is sometimes it comes with photo shoots, so I get to pretend to be an actual model/pretty for a few hours. In high school, I did hair modeling for a Paul Mitchell show for Cost Cutters. It was fun to get my hair cut on stage AND get a nice swag bag. I think if I added it up over the years, I've saved over a grand in cuts and colors (some of the places would charge $200+ for the cut and color I've gotten done!).

  2. You guys are so fashionable. I fear I haven't had my hair professionally cut for well over 20 years, and have never had it colored (well, OK - once with wash out stuff for Halloween, but that doesn't really count.) There are certain benefits to embracing one's inner dork.

    1. non-professional cuts are fun and awesome. I wish I knew somebody here who could cut my hair other than my husband who probably wouldn't leave me bald, but I think he wouldn't know what to do with my 18" locks. Best haircut I ever got was from a friend in college. I sat on the counter in the dorm bathroom and she gave me an awesome bob.

    2. Well... I just cut it myself. It helps that my hair is wavy - it hides a multitude of sins when it comes to getting it even!

  3. My hair is now quite long, but with scraggy split ends..I am tempted just to trim the ends myself, as it doesn't really have a particular style at the moment..!
