I just saved $50 with a needle and thread

And so can you!

I'm short which means that finding a pair of pants that are the right length for me is pretty much impossible. I used to get my pants professionally hemmed at $10/pair. That was fine when I was consistently one size and wasn't buying new pants every other month. This time I decided to hem my five pairs of pants by myself.
Here's a good video that shows you too can hem pants without much time or talent. Do you do your own hemming?

  1. Great job!!! I used to have my MIL hem my pants, and The Husband used to hem all of his own pants. Now I just buy the same brands that make jeans for short people (American Eagle is my absolute favorite for this) or do the now "trendy" thing and just roll the jeans up. This totally wouldn't work for slacks though. I too used to have the hardest time finding slacks made for petite women and just compensated by wearing high heels--but am glad that I now have zero slacks in my closet (when I worked at VS Beauty we were REQUIRED to wear a suit every day UGH!).

    1. Your hubs used to hem all of his own pants? Wow!

I'm very happy that the brand I wear (Limited) now makes "short" versions of their pants like Express. Unfortunately they always seem to be out of them when I need them!

Sounds like VS beauty wasn't a great place to work!

  2. Damn, I'm jealous! I'm tall, and have just the opposite problem with pants - they're always too short - and unfortunately it's harder to alter them to make them longer! Although since wearing heels became all the rage, it's gotten easier to find pants that fit.

  3. Well done, Zoe. Skills such as basic hemming are a big step to saving yourself some money. It is more than just money, though. Demonstrating a level of self-reliance with projects like this can inspire you to tackle more complex projects.

I love the feeling of satisfaction in being able to say, "I did it myself".

    1. Thank you! My grandmother did tell me that I needed to learn to do more things by myself, and I'm proud that I'm able to do this now.

  4. I'm in the same situation as EcoCatLady. Since high heels are the thing to wear, I can now find slacks that are long enough for me to wear with flats. which brings me around to your quesiton - no I don't hem pants unless they come undone and need repair, because you can't let out what isn't there. However I do repairs of buttons, seams, and holes in work jeans. When insulated coveralls cost at least $100, you do all you can to extend their lifespan, especially when the repairs don't need to be pretty.

    1. Hi Gail! Thanks for stopping by. Buttons are something I too fix occasionally. Holes I'm not so good at. Any tips?
