For shame!

Have you ever found something in your home or office and just thought, WTF?!?

I keep a small collection of trinkets on a shelf my desk. I'll show you my workspace in a post later this week--I'm looking for suggestions on how to improve it and what to get rid of! But anyways, I started looking through the trinkets to decide what to get rid of and spotted this.

It's missing a few pieces, and some marketing catch phrases. So let me try again:
The Desktop Titanic...$6.95 worth of amusement "when you get that sinking feeling!"

Because a disaster where over 1000 people froze to death in icy waters because somebody thought appearances were the most important things is something to compare with small disasters at the office!

I was born on the 71st anniversary of the Titanic sinking and it's fascinated me since I was a child. My mom got me this little "desktop Titanic,"complete with mini lifeboat, a few years ago. I finally looked at it and realize I can't keep it in good conscience. I have plenty of books that treat the subject with respect. What was left of this little model went in the trash.

What's your WTF?! item?

  1. Ha! That is priceless. Now I've got the girl scout Titanic song stuck in my brain...

It was sad (so sad) It was sad (mighty sad)
It was sad when the great ship went down to the bottom of the sea
Husbands & wives, little children lost their lives,
It was sad when the great ship went down.

    My apologies...

  2. My item isn't odd in itself, it's actually.really non-descript...I have a cardboard box that I put my recyclable stuff in before putting it in the main bin...thing is, at some point I thought about getting rid of this box...but I realised that I was really attached to said box, on the basis that I have had it for years, and it had been hanging around my parents' house for even longer than that. It's a frigging box! It once had tuna tins in it! But...I'd feel bad about chucking it out. Possibly because it would have hurt feelings (!)

    Sigh.

I'm usually really good at chucking stuff out, so this is my 'wtf' item due to my inexplicable attachments to it...

    1. It's not just you! I actually had to convince myself to throw out a tissue box this week. I was holding on to it just because it had Eeyore on it. Like you said, it's a frigging box!

    2. Glad to hear that I am not alone! At the moment, the box has a purpose, so it can stay...but if it should become unnecessary..eek...

    3. I have massive trouble tossing boxes. I tend to see them as useful for storing crap... which is part of the problem! I also used to sell things online, and I collected boxes for shipping. But enough is enough!!! It's a stupid box, and there are more where it came from! Oy Vey!

  3. I've found a diary I've forgot the appearance of it for a long time. When first seeing it, I didn't know what it was. It took me ten minutes to realize that's my diary when I was in elementary school. So interesting! There were many secrets and feeling at that time. So cute! Now I'm an adult and develop one online diary for myself. But the memories is priceless and so meaningful.

    1. wow, that's awesome! those are the kind of cool things that I've always felt were okay to keep. The online diary is a great idea. I think that's why a lot of us here blog!

If you'd like to do a guest post about why you decided to keep the diary and how you decide to keep/toss things, or why you prefer the online journal, I'd love to have you write a guest post!

  4. My work desk WTF item is a string of dental floss. I have one tooth that catches everything so I pull out my one string swipe it through, wipe it off and stick it back. I'm sure you are cringing now. I suppose it is pretty gross but to me it is so wasteful to pull out 18" of floss for one lousy swipe just to throw it away, especially since I snack so much all day. Maybe that would be a way to cut down snacking?! I may have to try that. Okay. Right now. I am throwing the floss in the trash. So now I guess I need a new WFT item.
